Our full day experience begins with an early 6:00 AM departure from Drake Bay, allowing you to reach Sirena Station by 8:00 AM. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your certified bilingual naturalist guide who will lead you on multiple hiking trails throughout the day. The morning session focuses on birdwatching and spotting mammals in their natural habitat, with frequent stops for photography and wildlife observation. The afternoon exploration continues with additional trails leading to different ecosystems within the park, concluding around 4:00 PM before your return journey to Drake Bay by 6:00 PM.
WILDLIFE SPECIES
At Sirena Station, you’ll have opportunities to observe an incredible variety of wildlife. Jaguars, pumas, and ocelots roam these forests, though sightings require patience and luck. More commonly encountered are howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and spider monkeys whose vocalizations echo through the canopy. The park is home to all four Costa Rican cat species and an astounding array of birds including macaws, toucans, herons, and eagles. Sloths, coatis, tapirs, anteaters, and numerous reptile species are regularly spotted by observant travelers.
PHYSICAL DIFFICULTY
This tour requires a moderate to good level of physical fitness. You’ll be hiking on sometimes challenging terrain with elevation changes, steep sections, and muddy paths during rainy seasons. The trails can be slippery and uneven, requiring steady footing and careful attention. The humid tropical climate means you’ll be walking in heat and moisture for extended periods. We recommend being comfortable hiking for several hours with minimal breaks, proper footwear, and physical conditioning before your visit.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The dry season from December through April offers the most comfortable weather and best visibility for wildlife viewing. During these months, trails are more accessible and the humidity is lower. The green season from May to November brings lush vegetation and increased wildlife activity, though expect frequent afternoon rains. September and October are the quietest months with fewest visitors, but weather can be unpredictable. Each season offers unique advantages for different types of wildlife observation.
CLIMATE AND WEATHER
Sirena experiences a tropical climate with average temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Humidity is consistently high, ranging from 80 to 90 percent. The dry season offers clearer skies and lower rainfall, while the rainy season features afternoon downpours that cool the forest and increase wildlife activity. Morning conditions are typically clearer than afternoons regardless of season. Pack lightweight, moisture wicking clothing, and always bring rain protection.
PHOTOGRAPHY OPPORTUNITIES
This destination offers exceptional opportunities for nature and wildlife photography. The diverse ecosystems provide stunning backdrops from river landscapes to forest canopy scenes. Wildlife encounters, though not guaranteed, can yield incredible shots of monkeys, birds, and occasionally larger mammals. Early morning light through the forest canopy creates magical atmospheric conditions. Professional photographers should consider bringing telephoto lenses and extra memory cards. Your guide can position your group for optimal photography while ensuring animal welfare and respectful observation distances.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND CONSERVATION
Corcovado National Park represents one of Costa Rica’s most important conservation areas. Visiting responsibly means following park regulations, staying on designated trails, and respecting wildlife by maintaining proper distances. The park’s strict policies protect both the environment and visiting experience for future generations. Your tour fees contribute directly to park maintenance and wildlife protection programs. The National Park Service actively monitors species populations and habitat health to ensure long term sustainability.
